Halloween is right around the corner, and what better way to spook up your party than with a Halloween charcuterie board? Forget about plain old cheese and crackers; it’s time to bring in some bone-chilling delights that will have both the little ghouls and grown-up goblins gravitating towards your creepy creation.

How to Make a Charcuterie Board

First, pick a large, dark wooden board as the canvas for your eerie edible art. Now, think of all the spooky decorations you can scatter around: skeleton hands can clutch at the edges, a faux skull might sit in the center, and tiny plastic spiders can crawl across the arrangement for that extra touch of creepiness.

Cheeses and Meats

The foundation of any great charcuterie board is the cheese, and for a Halloween board, the more unusual, the better. Start with a wheel of brie, cleverly transformed into a spooky mummy. Unwrap the brie and slice off the top rind, setting it aside. Using thin strips of the cheese, wrap the wheel to resemble mummy bandages, leaving space for two olive ‘eyes’ peering out. This can serve as a chilling centerpiece.

Next, add in some meats. Think beyond the typical slices and consider shapes and themes. You could make a meaty ‘chain’ by linking folded salami slices, draped around the board like eerie garlands. Intersperse with some prosciutto ribbons, which you can fashion to look like they’re fluttering in a ghostly breeze across the board.

For cheeses, beyond the mummy brie, opt for colors and flavors that evoke the Halloween spirit. A black wax-coated cheddar or a burgundy-washed goat cheese adds both a visual and flavorful contrast. Slice these cheeses neatly and arrange them in staggered layers, giving height and depth to your layout.

Crackers and Fruits

Now, for some creepy crunch—add crackers but skip the plain varieties. Go for pumpkin-seed crisps or charcoal squares that continue the theme. Arrange these in tall, cascading piles like crumbling tombstones.

And don’t forget the fruits—though choose with an eye for the macabre. Dark grapes, pomegranate seeds, and blackberries offer a gothic touch and a burst of freshness amidst the richer fare. Scatter these around the board like little edible black stones or pile them in corners like gathered shadows.

Finally, the details that bring your spooky scene to life: Use small bowls of bright, green olives or tiny mozzarella balls as eyeballs. Drizzle some red pepper jelly or a balsamic reduction around the board for a ‘blood-splattered’ effect. Every element should add both flavor and fright.
