As a college student, having good organizational skills is vital to do your best academically. There are many different things to keep track of at school, especially when living on campus. You will have to stay on top of classes and assignments given to you by your professors, and also make time to study to ensure understanding of your coursework. Extracurricular activities like clubs and sports are also a major part of the college experience.

Now you may be thinking, “This is a lot to keep track of!” While this may be so, it can be handled as long as there is a system in place to make sure that you take care of your priorities. Here are five organizational tips that you can utilize to make the most out of college and succeed:

Create a Schedule That You Are Committed To

One of the great things about college is having the flexibility to choose your classes as opposed to your previous years of schooling where you are given a predetermined schedule. Take advantage of this and create a schedule that works for the type of student you are. If you prefer learning later on in the day, opt for late morning, afternoon or evening classes. If you like to have a break for yourself in between learning, don’t take any classes back to back and use that time to study at the library instead. Insert a block of time daily for completing homework and other important assignments. Keep track of this in a planner and it will help you stay consistent in getting things done.

Use a Calendar

Having a daily planner or dry erase calendar, where you keep track of all significant dates and assignments, is crucial for crushing college. Many professors typically hand out a syllabus, which is a document that outlines everything you would need to know about the course from test dates, assignment due dates, and topics being covered. Once you receive this, write down everything that is important to remember on your calendar or in your planner so you are always aware of what you need to do. This takes away the pressure of not knowing when you need to complete something and makes sure that you plan out the time to do it.

Organize Your Coursework by Class

Keeping your notes and study materials organized is necessary for excelling in your classes. Some people like binders because you can use dividers to separate each section for each class. Sections in your binder can also be used for any handouts that your professor may give you or returned work like quizzes and exams. An alternative to using a binder can be a multi-subject notebook which typically has premade sections and pockets or folders to put any papers you need to keep together.

Use a Backpack

This may be a shocking tip on this list, but you would be surprised at how many people do not use a college backpack. Many students are comfortable with just holding their binder and stationery and attending class. Using a college backpack ensures that you have every material that contributes to your learning experience. Sometimes you may have to carry your laptop or use your textbook while in class. Not having these essentials can be problematic especially if your teacher includes having certain materials in class for your participation grade.

Take Care of Yourself

College can be a stressful time for a young adult or anyone that is focusing on their studies. Carve out time to keep your work and living space organized. Work out and practice healthy eating, as this can help you avoid the dreaded weight gain associated with attending college. Make sure you get good rest and do not develop a dependency on energy drinks to keep you going! Your productivity will naturally be high as long as you maintain daily practices that feed your mind.

Being organized in college can ensure your success and make your college experience memorable in all the best ways! You got this!
