What Is a Fitted Sheet?

A fitted sheet is a type of bedding commonly used to cover mattresses. It has elasticated edges that hug the bed and keep the sheet in place which is why it is the most popular style of sheet in the world. But as tidy as it looks encasing your mattress, when it comes time to put it away, folding a fitted sheet can quickly become a pile of wrinkly mess.

Folding a Fitted Sheet

There are several methods for folding a fitted sheet, but the roll-up and flat-fold methods are the most common.

1. Roll-up Method

Start by laying the sheet out on a flat surface. Grab each corner of the sheet and move your hands towards each other as you fold it into thirds, like a flag. Then, starting from one end, roll up the entire sheet as tightly as possible until you reach the end. You should now have an easy-to-handle roll that you can store neatly in your linen closet.

2. Flat-fold Method

To complete this method, lay out the sheet on a flat surface. Hold onto the top two corners of the sheet and fold it in half lengthwise while lifting and folding it over itself with your other hand. Flip it over and repeat this process with the two bottom corners so that you now have four symmetric folds going down the length of the sheet. Place your hands on each corner and fold into themselves, creating as few creases as possible. This technique creates smaller rectangles that you can then fold into manageable squares. Use this method if you prefer nice, crisp lines around your bedding.

So Which Method Is the Best?

The roll-up method offers convenience and saves time, making it ideal for people who need to put their sheets away quickly or don’t have much storage space in their homes. This method may not provide enough compression for some materials, such as bamboo sheets, and could lead to wrinkles or uneven edges.

The flat-fold method works on all types of sheets, creating clean lines and a smooth finish every time. The downside is that it can be time-consuming compared to other methods but is still much more manageable than stuffing large fitted sheets into tight linen closets. We personally love this one the best; although it takes more time than the roll-up method, it results in a tidier result.
