I work from home, and that, for many of my friends who work in offices, is a blessing. I don’t have to get up early in the morning, like them, and run to the office (sometimes without having breakfast). But to be honest, working from home is not as easy as one might think unless you have made some good arrangements. My own past routine (or better not to call it a routine since it didn’t follow any specific trajectory) might attest to this fact. I would wake up whenever I wanted (a privilege, right?). And with that, all the urgent tasks–that needed to be done a day before–would also wake me, forcing me into forgetting and remembering later that “breakfast is not supposed to be eaten at 1 p.m.”

Not only that, waking up and gluing to my laptop in my bedroom also caused something else. I’m talking about neck strain and bad posture. It is also natural when you are working like this, you are likely to attract all the clutter around you. Water bottles, computer wires, and food leftovers–all these things would accompany me. All these things eventually started taking a toll on my productivity. And that’s when I decided to make some changes to my routine and work setup.

The changes were not huge, but their impact certainly was. They helped me be more productive and get my tasks done on time. I am going to share a few things that really helped me, but not with the view that they can work for everyone. However, I am certain that if you make slight changes to them according to your taste, aesthetics, and needs, they might also work for you.

I Left My Bed and Chose a Spot

The first thing I did was leave my bed. It felt impossible at first as it’s not easy to leave the comfort and warmth that your blankets offer. But it had to be done, it was done, and it was the first small victory. I personally experienced that when I worked in my bed. It made me less productive–now I would hide myself inside the blanket and then drowsily get back to work. Amid all this what I was doing was wasting a big chunk of time that should have been utilized to get some work done.

I Invested in a Nice Desk

Setting up a workspace was something on my mind for a long time but couldn’t materialize, thanks to my habit of procrastination. It was when I had invested in a nice ergonomic chair, but it was lying in the store uselessly. So, I took the chair out of the store, thoroughly cleaned it, and set it aside. I bought an office desk and made my first workstation. The desk was designed with a small hole on top of it, which would allow all the wires to pass through it. This solved all my clutter issues that, otherwise, could have emerged due to the wires and cables. With this half of my home office was already ready.

I Placed the Setup in Front of the Open Window

I set the office desk and the chair in such a way that they were I was in front of the window while working. Now, this might not suit everyone but it really helped me. I never liked working in a space where I continuously had to stare at the wall before me. It never let me think creatively. With this setup, when I got I tired, I could look out the window to break the monotony of whichever task I was doing.

I Got a Desk Lamp

After getting a desk lamp, I realized that it was my biggest mistake not getting one before. As someone with weak eyesight, I always struggle to see clearly, especially in dimly lit rooms, and having proper lighting has made all the difference. It reduced eye strain and improved my focus and productivity. My desk lamp has a wider base, and dimmable LED blub, which is best for eye comfort and concentration. The wider base is an added bonus for stability, so it doesn’t topple over easily.

I Specified A Separate Place for Every Item

You are less likely to stay productive when you have to get up for every small thing you need while working, such as a pen, paper, or charging your laptop. My setup was where I had a switch at arm’s length to charge all my gadgets including my phone and laptop. I also designated a separate space for everything I needed while working. This allowed me to remain focused and productive by minimizing distractions. I also noticed that I was getting up less frequently for small tasks.

I Brought in Some Plants

Bringing in some plants made a huge difference in my workspace. The presence of greenery instantly made my environment feel more inviting and calming. They contributed to better air quality and made the room feel fresher. And having them nearby offered a simple way to connect with nature during work breaks.

Taking a moment to water or adjust them became a mini ritual that allowed me to step away from tasks, recharge, and return with a clearer mind. The calming effect of plants created a balanced environment that not only improved my mood but also enhanced my overall productivity.
